Amazing views on the way to Darjeeling

One of the most visited cities of West Bengal which also possesses UNESCO World Heritage property (the toy train) is the Queen of Hills – Darjeeling. One can see the majestic views of the third highest mountain in the world- the mighty Kanchendzonga or Kanchanjunga as we often address it. It goes without saying that you will find the best quality tea in this place as it is very much popular in the entire world for it’s tea production. The local food especially momo, thukpa, taipo, phale, and aloo Mimi are some of the must-try food when roaming the streets of Darjeeling.

One can witness one of the best sunrises from the Tiger hill viewpoint in Darjeeling. One should also visit attractions like Batasia Loop, Ghum Monastery, Tenzing Rock, Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Darjeeling Zoo, the ropeway to see the majestic view of Darjeeling city from an aerial view, the happy valley tea garden, etc. which are within the city limits of Darjeeling. The toy train joy ride must be on the bucket list when visiting the city. It is a experience of a lifetime. Also do not forget to try English breakfast at Keventers and lunch at Glenarys while you are in Darjeeling.

The outskirts of Darjeeling are pretty wide and cover a lot of other tourist destinations. The entire Darjeeling district of West Bengal is full of several small tourist attractions. We have only focussed on the main city of Darjeeling in this article.

How to reach Darjeeling

One can reach Darjeeling from any part of the country very easily. The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP). The nearest airport is Bagdogra (IXB). Both these terminals are situated in Siliguri. You can easily book a taxi to Darjeeling. The price range differs from season to season ranging between (3000- 4500). One can also book a shared taxi to Darjeeling which costs 200-250. But for that, he/she needs to come to the Tenzing Norgay bus terminal through auto. It is mention-worthy that Government buses are the cheapest mode of transport here. The price of the ticket from Siliguri to Darjeeling on a government bus is 105 rupees. It takes 3-4 hours to reach Darjeeling from Siliguri.

Best Time to Visit

The city of Darjeeling can be visited all around the year. I will recommend avoiding visiting the city during monsoon as there are frequent landslides in the area. Winters can be the best time to visit Darjeeling to experience chilling weather. Snowfall can also be experienced by visitors if they are lucky. Spring months are ideal for experiencing lush green mountains.

Things to Remember

Whenever visiting the city of Darjeeling, there are a few important things to note. Always carry rain gear as weather may change drastically in any season. Even if you are traveling in the summer or spring months, carry a light jacket. Things get cold suddenly in the mountains. Respect the local people and you will have the best experience. And always be a responsible traveler and do not litter around the city.

While in the history, the English people settled here in Darjeeling specially because of its climate, soil and very fresh water body. The flora and fauna are indeed used until today for various medical purposes.
